How Do We Want Robots to Touch Us?

Madelaine Ley is a PhD candidate in Science and Technology Studies researching the ethics of using social robots in elderly care, focusing particularly on how physical contact with robots shapes emotional intimacy and affects feelings of loneliness. Her academic work, including a master’s in philosophy and bioethics, is all motivated by a desire to better understand human companionship. This work is largely shaped by her twelve years working and volunteering with Boarding Homes Ministry (BHM), an organization that gathers small kinship-based communities in Toronto’s inner-city.
